posed
I was forwarded a silly email from an old friend last week with family photos taken in the style of the day, whether in obviously artificial settings or stilted poses - usually both. The accompanying commentary made fun of the subjects’ hairstyles or outdated clothing or outlandish accessories or the clash between the background (wagon wheels and hay bales) with the subjects’ wardrobe (business suits).
While the cats paused briefly in their chase around the house (the curtains being a favorite stalking post), I caught them in classic Olan Mills portrait poses. You’ll have to excuse Minou’s mismatched background; he’s somewhat attached to this beach towel.

“You must have money to burn,” was my friend’s reply when I sent him these images. Even he recognized an Olan Mills pose!

Ah, I remember Olan Mills from high school senior portraits. You’re so fancy, taking your cat out for professional photos.
The sad thing is that I’m sure there are people who do that.
That picture of the first cat is fabulous! It should go in his portfolio. Very Olan Mills, haha!

WC - I don’t think I intended to take Olan Mills poses, but here they are, and then I got that email and they seemed to fit right in
About taking cats to a studio - I don’t know how I’d keep them from running all over the place.
.
Hello Margaret, when they hold still they take nice photos, don’t they?
They are both really lovely photos! I think hers, with that slight quizzical look, just has the edge.
Olan MIlls! hahahaha Great “professional” shots. Your cats are just too cute!
But seriously, you should frame these two photos, they are really good.
Flighty, she often has that “I’m not doing anything bad, am I?” look.
.
Thanks, Ginni. One day I might print a calendar of these guys.
Those are good photographs of your kitties. I am glad that they are starting to get along better.
I posted a pic of L. today for you.
I always look forward to seeing pictures of your cats because they are SO gorgeous!
Hehe, at least you didn’t go on the “portraits with the floating heads” route.
Dilated eyes: the mark of a kitty in “naughty” mode!
Kate, I got my L. fix! Thanks
.
Christine - Heeee! The “floating head/face” shots were the most contrived looking portraits - and in this email, they looked positively silly.
.
MM - I’m definitely in trouble, as these cats’ eyes are often dilated. They are always up to something.
Oh yes, a calendar! Emm’s cranberry coloured background is a sumptuous offset for her black and whiteness.
Cute photos, very professional looking, even with the mismatched background. Love the look they have.
