the whirling dervish

If you’ve been reading these pages for any length of time, you’ll know exactly who I mean by the title above - our very own acrobatic cat, Emmaline. You’ve read emailed reports from roomie about her daily antics, you’ve seen her vaulting after cat toys, you’ve seen the blur of her little black and white body as she maneuvers deftly under and around (and sometimes through) furniture.

Did you know she has a quiet contemplative side?

Emmaline ponders the poetry of birdsongs.

Of course, it only lasts about 23 seconds. You know this is more the norm:

But one of her heretofore hidden talents is music - she plays a mean scratching post.

Happy weekend everyone!

Update from roomie: Well, this morning was the best single participant pillow fight ever. She has been carrying it around in her mouth, tossing it, kicking it, playing hockey, rolling over it, chasing it, and catching it. She even fell backwards and knocked over the scratching post and turned her bed upside down. She is in the bed again now rocking back and forth tipping it like a dingy from side to side. She threw the pillow out of the bed, crouched down inside the bed as if she were stalking it, then jumped out on top of it in the most ferocious manner and threw herself, with pillow, against the sliding glass door. This has been going on for a long time now with no signs of stopping. Occasionally she will jump on my knees or shoulder to ask how my project is coming along and condole with me that I don’t have something more interesting to do.

Earlier she was clacking at birds, jumping on the back of my “leather” computer chair (yikes) on top of the elliptical LCD panel (good thing there is a cover on that). Oh, she has just stopped tussling so she can pull the whiskers off the little blue mouse.

  1. I love the first picture of Emmaline! Wouldn’t you love to know exactly what she was contemplating at that moment. She looks completely, 100% focused on that bird.

    It’s a really sweet photo!

  2. Who would have thought that’s Emmaline in the first pic?! I’m astonish–had no idea she could be so calm and quiet ;o) She is such rambuncious sweetie-pie…Happy weekend to you & the kitties ((HUGS))

  3. All those pictures are excellent, especially the one where she is eating the armchair!

  4. What a nut! I love these pictures. The one with her biting the chair arm is my desktop picture now. Crazy kitty.

In the last one it looks like she’s trying to learn how to play the guitar.

  5. She really has ‘that’ look in the first photo doesn’t she!
Have an enjoyable, and hopefully relaxing, weekend! xx

  6. she looks like a lot of fun!

  7. Thanks, Marilyn. Emmaline is a dedicated bird watcher. She calls to them and cries when they don’t come visit her!
    .
Tracy, thanks friend. I hope we’ll have a lot of play time - Em’s pretty good at self-entertainment, but she misses her button toy.
    .
Vero and Fiwa - roomie took that pic of the chair-eating cat. I love it, too!
    .
Flighty, Em has plans for her for her day, and that always includes birds!
    .
MM, Emmaline is some of the best entertainment there is!

  8. Wow, that Emmaline sure knows how to enjoy her cat life! I had to laugh at all her antics….and she seems so dedicated to playing! Maybe I should take a lesson from her.

She has the most beautiful green eyes; I love that first shot you managed to capture during the 23 seconds of her contemplative mood.

  9. Meh! She might not be on her feet in that top photo, but she is wound up waiting intently for the next opportunity to spring.

  10. Cats for me are the most adorable subjects…I miss photographing them. =)

  11. hahahaha! I just LOVE that girlcat!
    XOXO

  12. Wow… Emmaline is so cute and of course hyperactive. I wondered why my 6 brats are becoming sleepy heads all of a sudden :P

Pss.. the green toy mouse is so unique :)

  13. Love the pics of Emmaline. I was going to ask if she was feeling better now! X

  14. She’s hilarious.

  15. She sounds like a lot of fun, and oh so cute, I want to hug her. Of course I know you don’t just hug a cat. We kiss ours when they sleep.

  16. She is just plain cute. Active, crazy cute. But very, very cute!!!

  17. What a funny kitty! Where does she get all that energy? No wonder her ‘brother’ backs away…

  18. Sara, “dedicated to playing” is a perfect description for Emmaline!
    .
Liv, you saw through her ruse right away, didn’t you. She does have definite down time, though - during dinner, she comes and sits by me and sleeps.
    .
g_mirage, I’m assuming you used to photograph cats - more than one?
    .
Criz Lai, yes, hyperactivity comes with being a young kitty ;-)
    .
Louise, thank you for asking - she is definitely better. Stopped sneezing altogether, though Minou still sneezes from time to time.
    .
Natalie, she doesn’t have to try very hard either.
    .
Dawn, both the cats are learning to put up with hugs - roomie and I love hugging them so I will pass on your hugs to them!
    .
Julie, we’ve just about worn out the word “cute” around my house, but it can’t be helped!!!
    .
Willow, if I could bottle just 10% of that energy…….

  19. I bet she gives you as much trouble trying to get a decent shot as my grandson does me. :) She is beautiful in her contemplative side and fun and lovable in her excited state.

  20. Lisa, I quite agree with the difficulty in shooting moving objects. I’m used to roses that sit quietly and composedly - and I’ve never had so many blurry photos in my iPhoto!
