Beautiful! Anne, I have to ask you– can you interplant roses and camellias? I have camellias in an area in the front of my house and I would like to plant roses there too. Are they good neighbors?
Willow, it depends on whether there’s enough sun. I think you and I both have camellia japonica, the kind that like shade. Roses need at least 4 hours of sun in our climate. As for roses and camellias as neighbors, I think they should be okay. I’ve heard that camellias don’t like their roots disturbed and prefer acidic soil. Roses, in my experience, don’t seem to mind either condition.
Thanks, Anne. I had intended to pull the camellias from the front garden and replace them with roses, but I’m certain that we do get enough sun in that area, certainly during the summer months. I shall experiment and then report.
Just gorgeous. I love camellias. I knew a girl named Camellia once, I thought that was so pretty. I love gardenias too. Well, not as a name, but the fragrance!
Flighty, somehow these are managing in our very alkaline soil (this is why I have a dreadful time turning my hydrangeas blue). But they are certainly sheltered planted right next to the house. Thought you might enjoy their white blooms.
I sure didn’t know they bloomed in the fall, but then you have flowers most of the year. That is a beautiful shot. I always have trouble with white flowers, especially when surrounded by such dark green.
Graceful and exquisite elegance! Lovely photo, Roomie ~ thanks for sharing it with us, Nikki. I have a red camellia bush at the front, but won’t see any buds for some months!
So GORGEOUS…I’ve always loved camellias, no luck growing the here though–LOL! So I am happy to admire yours, Anne…That snow white and fresh green is breathtaking…aaahhh… Happy Day ((HUGS))
Modest sophistication.
It looks so healthy. Beautiful
I had no idea they bloom in the fall! Beautiful! They have strong good smells too, don’t they?

Lovely! They’re not the easiest of plants to grow here as they need acid soil and shelter to thrive. xx

It is also a vitally important plant as tea comes from one variety! xx

So beautiful! My best friend’s daughter wore a camellia in her hair when she was married this summer – she looked stunning.
