minou’s musings
Following is a fun poem Glo wrote as part of a Christmas gift to my aunt and uncle who have adopted our dear boycat.

From amber eyes with flecks of green,
I survey life, and what I’ve seen
would fill a book. Instead, a poem
I’ll write to you from my new home.
I reminisce, as do we all.
Relaxing now, I can recall
a time about two years ago
when I was feeling rather low.
Although I was but one year old,
I felt my life was stuck on hold,
until the day, “they” came to see,
and ended up adopting me!
I heard them call my name, “Minou—
Come home with us and start anew!”
Inside, my heart was filled with joy,
but after all, I was a boy,
so I played cool. Quite nonchalant,
deciding on which charm to flaunt!

At first I had to nose around,
become familiar with new ground.
I liked the place—no dogs or cats;
no sign of snakes, or mice, or rats…
Their home, indeed, was very clean,
and talk about their haute cuisine!
Before I’d been there very long,
they picked me up…Now what’s that song?
“Splish Splash, I was taking a bath!”
A cat plus water! Do the math!
Oh my, I thought I’d have a fit.
My claws spread out. I scratched. I bit.
At last they turned the blower on
to dry my fur, and I was done!
A bit traumatic for us three,
much like the time I caught the bee,
but I digress, there’s more to say
before I venture out to play.
I’d tolerate a kiss or hug,
but never was a cuddlebug.
In fact, I know I seemed quite rude,
but sometimes I was in a mood,
and didn’t feel like being petted,
although they worried some and fretted.
Sometimes I liked to dash about,
to scratch the sofa, hear them shout…

“Oh, Minou! Come and play with toys.
Here’s one that jiggles and makes noise.”
I had no time for toys with bling
and catnip never pulled my string,
although I kind of liked the fish
that they called Wanda. They must wish
I was a much more playful cat,
but I was me, and that was that!
I think they found her! Emmaline,
The wildest cat I’d ever seen!
The Princess Hissy Fit of Fame
who puts the Cirque Soleil to shame!

Now she’s an extrovert, indeed
and just the pet I think they need.
I much prefer a corner spot
where I can be alone and not
be pestered by a streak of fur
that leaps and carries on. Her purr
is even noisier than mine!
Sometimes we get along just fine—
especially when she paws the door
which opens up a little more…
I think it’s bliss to be outside.
Such freedom with no need to hide.
The patio’s a favored site
to roll and wriggle—such delight!
The garden’s beauty is renowned.
Serenity and peace abound.

But then, of course, there was that bee.
I scooped it with my paw, you see,
and shoved it in my mouth. Oh my!
My eyes popped out. I thought I’d die,
but down it went and all was well—
At least I didn’t bloat or swell!
Plumeria! Now there’s a treat
and much less dangerous to eat.
Just like roses … I don’t jest!
The yellow petals taste the best.
At times my searching eyes will glaze
when I see roses in a vase.
I hop up on the table quickly
to grab a rose, some smooth, some prickly.
Consuming petals one by one
is my idea of having fun.

Another food I love to eat
Is H. A. M.—it can’t be beat!
They spell it out, but I can tell
when my nose twitches at the smell.
A question now— “What rhymes with ham?
A new addition! Here comes Sam!
Samantha is a kitten. Cute?
You bet! She’s black and white, to boot.
She flings her paws and hangs on tight,
with kitten claws and kitten bite.
And so at last, enough’s enough.
I’ve got my leash and packed my stuff,
but don’t be sad, I’m not going far;
just six miles down the road by car.
There’s Aunt and Uncle, and just me.
We’ll live together happily.
Perhaps I’ll curl up in their room…
Plumeria and roses bloom—
I’ve seen them line the garden path.
I‘m hoping they don’t have a bath!

So sweet! Happy New Year, Minou!
That is simply delightful…well done Glo! I love the photos, especially the first one and the one with the yellow rose.
It’s so good to know that this story had a happy ending. xx
Hi Nikki, Roomie, Em and Sam ~ It was fun to read through my poem again, especially with the addition of your purrfect photos
Thanks for the mention and link as well.
The beet salad you made the other day looked fantastic ~ had my taste buds hopping!
I also wanted to mention that your comment on Flighty’s blog re me being post-occupied now, was very witty and quick! I’m still grinning about it ~ and the fact that it’s true! It hasn’t quite clicked yet, but a great way to start a New Year for me ~ being retired, I mean!
Wishing you all a terrific New Year and look forward to our continued friendship!
Awesome poem, awesome kitty and the photos are so sweet. I just enjoyed this post so much! Thank you for sharing it and Happy New Year.
Such a wonderful poem, Glo is amazing, and I love the pics of sweet Minou but most of all I love it that Minou is doing so well in his new home.
Flighty and Yolanda, you’ve hit the nail on the head. That boy is so happy with his new friends. He’s svelte and sleek and everyone who visits can see how spoiled he is
.
Thank you again, Glo. We love this poem. You’ve got a lot of anticipation in 2010 with your new scope as a retiree.
I enjoyed the poem and the photos. Good work everyone.
A wonderful poem of memories. It is so great Minou has a home where you can visit him and he can be him. Our friends from Australia had a cat when they lived here and left him with mutual friends who were going to ‘mail’ him to them. The cost of transport was too great and the friends down under decided they couldn’t afford it so our mutual friends were stuck with the cat. They didn’t want a cat but loved him and after a year and a half had to find him a home. We convinced our next door neighbours to take him. They are not cat people either but they promised their son a cat when they came to the acreage. They took Casper and have had him since and we have known this cat since he was a kitten 5 years ago. He is special to us and we see him regularly but he has a wonderful home and now those people are cat people.
